Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has pledged to robustly advocate for Iran’s interests at global gatherings as he heads to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. Speaking on Tuesday before his departure, Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s commitment to presenting its stance with determination at the international event.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who arrived in New York on Monday, is leading Tehran’s diplomatic efforts at the UN assembly. Araghchi engaged in a phone discussion with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres upon his arrival, addressing topics pertinent to the General Assembly. He highlighted that Iran intends to utilize the platform to underscore what it sees as the rights and interests of its citizens.
The Iranian delegation’s participation occurs against the backdrop of ongoing Middle East tensions and a dispute over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical corridor for global oil and gas transport. Iran has indicated it conveyed reopening conditions for the waterway through Qatar, while facing U.S. measures targeting Iranian ports.
During the assembly, Araghchi is expected to hold discussions with foreign ministers and other international officials. These engagements aim to further articulate Iran’s positions and seek diplomatic avenues in light of the region’s complex geopolitical landscape.
