Iran-backed Houthi fighters have launched a missile and drone assault on a military base in southern Saudi Arabia, escalating tensions as clashes with Yemeni government forces intensify. The attack, for which Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed responsibility, reportedly targeted weapons depots and command-and-control centers at the Sharurah military base. According to Saudi civil defense authorities, a projectile landed near the Yemeni border, injuring two individuals and causing damage to a mosque and several buildings.
In response, Yemeni government forces have ramped up their offensives against Houthi positions, conducting three airstrikes in the Taiz region and focusing on Houthi targets near the Red Sea port city of Mocha. This comes on the heels of a week-long Houthi campaign that saw the group seize control of much of Yemen’s Red Sea coast and several strategic islands. These advances have bolstered the Houthis’ influence near the crucial Bab al-Mandab Strait, a vital maritime corridor at the southern entrance to the Red Sea.
The Houthis have further intensified the situation by declaring a maritime blockade of Saudi Red Sea ports. This move has sparked concerns over the potential impact on regional shipping and energy supplies, as the waterway becomes increasingly critical for Saudi oil exports amid disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia continues to back Yemen’s internationally recognized government, while the Houthis maintain their alignment with Iran, adding to the mounting regional tensions.
The renewed conflict has triggered a significant humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands of people fleeing their homes in search of safety. The United Nations has noted a sharp rise in displacement since July, while the ongoing violence has reportedly claimed more than 500 lives. This escalation threatens to exacerbate Yemen’s already dire humanitarian situation and poses a risk of further destabilizing the Red Sea region.
