Google Triumphs in US Antitrust Case, Avoids Breakup

In a significant ruling, a U.S. judge has denied the Department of Justice’s attempt to compel Google to divest its advertising exchange platform, AdX. This decision permits Google to continue operating a crucial component of its advertising technology business amidst ongoing antitrust scrutiny. Judge Leonie Brinkema’s ruling follows the 2025 court finding that Google had unlawfully sustained monopolies in the sectors of publisher ad servers and advertising exchanges.

The Justice Department, along with several states, had argued that due to Google’s previous conduct in the market, it should relinquish control of AdX. However, Google countered these claims, asserting that a forced sale would pose significant technical challenges and could potentially disrupt services for its customers. The court’s decision, while imposing certain behavioral restrictions on Google, refrains from mandating the divestiture of its ad exchange platform.

This outcome is another blow to U.S. antitrust authorities aiming to dismantle major tech conglomerates by enforcing asset sales. Their efforts to achieve similar outcomes in cases involving other leading technology firms have also met with limited success, as previous attempts have failed to secure mandatory sales of significant business units.

Despite retaining control over AdX, Google will now have to adhere to several behavioral measures designed to mitigate concerns about competitive practices and its interactions with publishers. These measures aim to address the core issues identified in the antitrust proceedings while allowing the tech giant to maintain its advertising infrastructure intact.
