Netanyahu Insists on Full Hamas Disarmament Before Gaza Pullout

by admin477351

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has firmly rejected a proposal backed by the United States that suggests linking the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza with a comprehensive peace agreement. Netanyahu insists that Israeli forces will remain until Hamas is completely disarmed. This stance is backed by Israeli intelligence assessments indicating that Hamas continues to recruit, rebuild its military capabilities, and stockpile weapons. Israel fears that a premature withdrawal could enable Hamas to regain control over Gaza, thus posing renewed security threats.

The proposed ceasefire framework, brokered by the US, includes several conditions: Hamas must surrender its arms and dismantle its tunnel network, Israeli forces would withdraw in stages, a Palestinian technocratic administration would be established, an international security force would be deployed, and efforts would be made to reconstruct Gaza. However, the Israeli government remains steadfast in its demand for complete disarmament of Hamas as a precondition for any troop withdrawal.

In the meantime, Israeli airstrikes have continued, resulting in the deaths of at least 17 people, including children, over the past few days. In a separate incident, Palestinians held a mass funeral following the recovery of more than 100 bodies from the rubble in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood. This was the site of a major Israeli airstrike carried out in November 2023. Rescue teams are still working as many victims are feared to be trapped beneath the debris.

The ongoing conflict traces back to October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a significant attack on southern Israel, leading to the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the abduction of 251 hostages. This attack triggered the current hostilities in Gaza, with both sides suffering significant casualties and destruction. The situation remains tense as diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict face significant hurdles, particularly regarding the disarmament of Hamas and the conditions for a lasting peace.
