Breaking: EU Enacts €3 Charge on Small Imports, Targets Chinese E-Commerce.

The European Union has implemented a new €3 ($3.40) customs handling fee on low-value e-commerce parcels entering the region. This latest charge specifically targets imports from international online platforms such as Shein, Temu, and AliExpress, which previously gained an advantage from duty-free exemptions.

The fee is structured to apply to each customs classification within a shipment. Consequently, parcels containing various categories of items will attract multiple charges, whereas those with identical products will incur a single €3 fee. EU officials have clarified that this measure is designed to combat unfair competition and curb the abuse of customs exemptions that have enabled foreign online retailers to offer products at significantly reduced prices.

In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of low-value parcels entering the EU, fueled by the rapid growth of cross-border e-commerce. This surge has prompted the EU to introduce the new handling fee as a means to regulate and manage the influx more effectively.

Industry analysts predict that these newly imposed fees will initially lead to a reduction in e-commerce air shipments into Europe. In anticipation of this impact, online platforms may need to adjust their pricing strategies or negotiate with suppliers to share the additional costs incurred by the new measures.
