OpenAI has unveiled GPT-Live, a cutting-edge voice AI system designed to enhance the natural flow of conversations by enabling simultaneous speaking and listening. This new technology is based on a full-duplex architecture, which allows the AI to respond in real-time, incorporating natural conversational cues like “mhmm” and “yeah” to facilitate smoother interactions without lengthy pauses.
For intricate tasks necessitating web searches or sophisticated reasoning, GPT-Live efficiently delegates these to a more advanced AI operating in the background, ensuring ongoing communication with the user. At its launch, these complex tasks are managed by GPT-5.5, and OpenAI has announced plans to support even newer models in future updates.
This release coincides with OpenAI’s confirmation that the GPT-5.6 model series will soon be publicly available, pending additional cybersecurity assessments. The GPT-5.6 series features the flagship Sol model, alongside the Terra and Luna variants, marking a significant development in AI technology.
OpenAI is introducing two variations of its new voice models, GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini, to ChatGPT users globally. Furthermore, the company intends to offer GPT-Live through its API, providing developers and businesses with the capability to integrate real-time voice AI into their applications.
