Starting in September, Spotify will implement new strategies to identify and manage AI-generated artists on its platform. The streaming giant plans to label these artist profiles and track listings with an “AI persona” tag, aiming to help users distinguish between real musicians and those created by artificial intelligence. By default, these AI personas will also be excluded from personalized recommendations, an effort to safeguard genuine artists from being overshadowed by AI-generated content.
Spotify’s initiative reflects the rapid growth of AI-generated music, with the company previously reporting the removal of 75 million spam tracks over a year. This highlights the influx of artificial and low-quality music entering digital platforms. In response, Spotify is taking steps to enhance transparency, acknowledging that listeners increasingly seek to know whether they are engaging with human artists or AI creations.
Artists will have the option to voluntarily disclose if their identities are AI-generated. However, Spotify isn’t relying solely on self-reporting. The company will employ human reviewers alongside AI-driven tools to identify any undisclosed AI personas, ensuring the integrity of its platform.
This move underscores Spotify’s commitment to maintaining a fair playing field for real musicians, who face the challenge of competing with an ever-growing presence of AI-generated music. By clearly marking AI personas, Spotify aims to protect artists from losing visibility and maintain the trust of its audience in a rapidly evolving musical landscape.
