The Danish psychological thriller “The Secret Woman” centers around a woman named Louise, who is on a quest to discover her true identity after experiencing complete amnesia. Natalie Wolfsberg Madueño portrays Louise, who has created a peaceful life for herself in Norway, managing a rural café and planning to wed crime novelist Joachim, played by Pål Sverre Hagen. Her seemingly ordinary life takes a dramatic turn when a stranger identifies her by another name.
Upon taking a DNA test, Louise learns that she is actually Helene Söderberg, a Danish shipping heiress presumed dead. This revelation propels her back to Denmark in an effort to piece together her past, where she encounters Edmund, a former partner and influential company executive, played by Claes Bang. As Helene delves into her forgotten life, Joachim conducts his own investigation from Norway, unearthing a web of corruption, deceit, and human trafficking.
The film’s strengths lie in its compelling performances, particularly those of Madueño and Bang. Madueño imbues Helene with a layer of empathy, while Bang skillfully portrays Edmund as a man whose composed exterior gradually reveals a darker side. Despite these strong performances, the thriller’s plot suffers from a series of increasingly improbable twists and convenient plot developments. Helene’s memory returns at opportune moments for the storyline, and many of the clues and discoveries seem forced rather than naturally unfolding.
Moreover, the film misses the opportunity to deeply explore its characters and themes. While Edmund’s manipulative nature could have added a richer psychological dimension, his motives become clear too early in the narrative, undermining the suspense.
