Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has raised concerns about the increasing impact of social media algorithms, which he labeled as “algorithm fascism” for their role in blurring the distinctions between truth and misinformation. Addressing the audience at the Second Communication Council in Ankara, Erdoğan highlighted how digital platforms are increasingly shaping public opinion, making it challenging for individuals to discern facts from manipulated perceptions.
Erdoğan pointed out that while rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and communication technologies have revolutionized the way information is shared, they have also facilitated the spread of disinformation. He warned that social media platforms have the power to influence people’s thoughts, interpretations of events, and even alter historical narratives, thus posing a threat to cultural values and social cohesion.
The president emphasized that the Communication Council is tasked with formulating Türkiye’s future communication strategy. This initiative brings together government officials, academics, media representatives, and civil society experts, focusing on strengthening public communication policies in alignment with the nation’s long-term vision.
In his speech, Erdoğan also touched upon the ongoing investigation into the Ahbap charity. He mentioned that authorities are actively pursuing legal action against those accused of exploiting public trust in the aftermath of the 2023 earthquakes, ensuring accountability through the legal process.
