For a masterclass in suspense and paranoia, look no further than 10 Cloverfield Lane, the 2016 sci-fi horror film available on Prime Video. As the second movie in the Cloverfield franchise, it swerves from its predecessor’s found-footage chaos into a tense, psychological chamber piece.
The story begins with Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) packing a bag and leaving her life behind, only to be involved in a violent car crash. She awakens chained to a wall in a small, windowless room. Her rescuer, Howard (John Goodman), soon explains that he brought her to his sophisticated underground bunker to save her.
Howard’s claim is terrifying: there has been a massive attack, possibly chemical or alien, and the air outside is now toxic and unbreathable. He insists he saved her life and that the three of them—including another man in the bunker—are likely the only survivors.
The film’s unbearable tension comes from its ambiguity. John Goodman gives a career-best performance as Howard, a man who is both a nurturing, prepared survivalist and a deeply menacing, controlling figure. Michelle is trapped, and she—along with the audience—must constantly question what is true.
Is Howard a paranoid conspiracy theorist who kidnapped her? Or is he a prescient savior telling an unbelievable truth? As Michelle searches for answers and plots her escape, she begins to wonder if the monster she should fear is inside the bunker with her, or if an even greater horror awaits outside.
