Turkey’s political scene has experienced a significant transformation as 91 members of parliament, spearheaded by former Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Özgür Özel, exited the CHP to form a new political entity, the New Party (Yeni Parti). This mass resignation represents the largest division in the CHP’s recent history and shifts the dynamics of power in Turkey’s Parliament. With these lawmakers joining the New Party, it emerges as the primary opposition faction, while the CHP’s seats drop drastically from 135 to 44, resulting in the loss of its status as the leading opposition party in the country.
Özgür Özel inaugurated the New Party on Friday by signing its foundational documents, which were then submitted to the Interior Ministry for official registration. The 91 former CHP lawmakers now serve as members of the party’s founding board. Addressing the media in Ankara, Özel confirmed that the party had finalized its legal registration and was set to commence the formation of its leadership structure. The founding board plans to meet at the historical Anadolu Club, a venue established under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s guidance, to elect the party’s chairperson and governing bodies.
Özel expressed that the New Party would engage in the forthcoming parliamentary budget discussions as the main opposition for what he termed “the first and last time,” voicing optimism that the party would eventually lead a government prioritizing economic growth and political stability. This parliamentary change is anticipated to adjust seating arrangements in the General Assembly and expand the number of parliamentary groups from six to seven.
The split arises after months of internal discord within the CHP, following Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu’s return to leadership due to a court ruling that overturned the previous party congress. CHP spokesperson Müslim Sarı questioned the rationale behind forming a new party, pointing out Özel’s commitment to adhering to the same political principles as the CHP. Sarı remarked, “If you are going down the same path, why do you need a new party?” implying that the move seemed more about political maneuvering than distinct policy variations.
The establishment of the New Party is poised to alter the landscape of opposition politics in Turkey, setting the stage for pivotal legislative debates and future elections.
