Diego Gomez’s foul on Jeremy Doku led to the penalty that gave Manchester City the lead, but Brighton & Hove Albion fought back to secure a 1-1 draw on Wednesday. The result extends City’s winless run to three Premier League matches and leaves them five points behind Arsenal.
The penalty was awarded four minutes before halftime after VAR confirmed that Gomez had brought down Doku inside the penalty area. Erling Haaland stepped up to convert confidently, scoring his 150th goal for Manchester City and his first in four matches. The strike also took the Norwegian to 20 Premier League goals for the season.
City nearly doubled their advantage shortly after the restart when Bernardo Silva pounced on a Brighton defensive mistake, but his effort struck the post. Tensions escalated when City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton’s Maxim De Cuyper became involved in a heated exchange, with both goalkeepers shown yellow cards by the referee.
Brighton’s equalizer came in the 60th minute and was crafted by Kaoru Mitoma. The Japanese winger received a pass from wide, composed himself at the edge of the penalty area, and guided a low shot into the far corner with excellent technique, leaving Donnarumma with no chance.
After leveling the score, Brighton took command of the match, controlling possession and building attacks patiently. They came agonizingly close to completing the comeback when Mitoma’s creative play set up Gomez inside the box, but the midfielder couldn’t finish and Donnarumma made the save. Mitoma’s attempt to convert the rebound from a tight angle hit the post. City had one final opportunity to claim victory when Haaland found himself one-on-one with Verbruggen in injury time, but the Brighton goalkeeper produced an excellent save to preserve the draw.
