‘Bittersweet Day’: Wednesday Fans Oust Owner But Face Relegation Battle

by admin477351

Sheffield Wednesday fans are experiencing “one of the most bittersweet days” in their 158-year history after owner Dejphon Chansiri placed the club into administration. While the move triggers a 12-point deduction and a near-certain relegation, supporters are celebrating the end of Chansiri’s tenure.
The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust (SWST) stated they were “overjoyed” to have Chansiri “out of our club for good.” They blamed the owner for “years of financial mismanagement” and a “lack of accountability.” In a symbolic move, seats spelling out “Chansiri” in the North Stand were being removed less than an hour after the announcement.
The “phase of resistance,” which saw fans boycott merchandise and stay away from home games in their thousands, is now over. The SWST is calling on all fans to return for Saturday’s match against Oxford, declaring, “Now begins the phase of renewal.”
The Trust emphasized that the club’s most urgent need is income and stability. “Every ticket bought, every shirt worn, every pie and pint enjoyed in Hillsborough helps the club rebuild from the ground up,” their statement read.
To safeguard the club’s future, the Trust also revealed it has been working on a “fan-led takeover proposal.” This plan aims to ensure that even in a worst-case scenario, the “threat of liquidation will not be an option” for the historic club.
