Denmark to Ban Social Media for Under-15s as PM Warns Phones Are ‘Stealing Childhood’

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has announced plans to ban social media use for children under 15, warning that smartphones and online platforms are “stealing our children’s childhood.” The proposal, revealed during her address at the opening of parliament, follows growing concern over the link between excessive screen time and mental health issues among young people.
Frederiksen said the country must confront the “monster” it has created, noting the rise in anxiety, depression, and concentration problems among children. She added that too many young people are exposed to harmful online content and that social media platforms have failed to safeguard children’s wellbeing.
Under the proposal, parents could grant permission for children as young as 13 to access certain platforms. The measure could take effect as early as next year, mirroring similar actions in Australia and Norway aimed at protecting minors from the negative effects of social media algorithms.
Denmark’s digitalisation minister, Caroline Stage, called the move a “breakthrough,” saying the government must shift “from digital captivity to community.” The plan builds on Denmark’s earlier decision to ban mobile phones in schools, part of a nationwide push to improve youth wellbeing and digital safety.
